About Ballet Folklorico DFW

Dedicated to culture and service

The mission of Ballet Folklorico de Dallas Ft. -Worth is to share and preserve the Mexican culture through dance. We strive to create a nurturing & inclusive environment for dancers of all ages and skill levels to explore their passion, develop technique, foster creativity, and give back to the community.

In Jan. 2019 Melissa Magana began to offer traditional Mexican Folklorico classes to at a local community center in the North Texas area. In 2021, she formally started Ballet Folklorico de Dallas -Ft. Worth to offer classes to both children and adults in the entire DFW metroplex. Ballet Folklorico DFW's studio is located in Watauga, TX.

Maestra Melissa Magana

Director & Instructor

Melissa Magana is originally from El Paso, TX and began dancing folklorico at the age of 4 and through college. While studying mechanical engineering, she had the opportunity to tour nationally as member of one of the collegiate dance companies at her university (Living Legends). After graduating in mechanical engineering, she thought her dancing days were over as she set out to work as an engineer. With the support of her husband, the opportunity presented itself for her to leave the corporate world and stay at home with her children and focus on her passion for dancing.

In the 3 years since starting her own group, Ballet Folklorico DFW has performed over 100 times including headlining the TX Wesleyan University Global Classico Football half time show, competed and won over 30 trophies, and participated in a masterclass workshops with Amalia Viviana Basanta Hernandez, director of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.

Her goal as director of Ballet Folklorico DFW is to create a positive environment for every dancer to thrive both in and out of the dance studio.

Classical Ballet Instructor (Adults 12+)

Sara Kercho

Sara grew up dancing competitively at a local studio under Kari Anderson, the current owner of Dupree Dance. She was a lieutenant for the L.D. Bell Raiderettes and graduated from Texas Christian University where she was one of the captains of the TCU Showgirls. She has worked for MA Dance since 2005 in many different roles including instructor, adjudicator, officer camp executive staff, and social media manager. Most recently, Sara was a high school fine arts dance teacher and drill team director for ten years. Sara is a member of the Texas Dance Educators Association and recently took on the role of Executive Administrator for the Dance Educators Assessment of Learning. She has presented workshops focused on social emotional learning at both the Center for Educator Development in Fine Arts Summit & TDEA Convention.

Desiree Leon

Hi my name is Desiree, I enjoy folklorico because it connects me to my hispanic roots and also has led me to unforgettable friendships, other than dancing I hold a B.S. in Biology and work in health care. Both dance and taking care of patients have disciplined me with qualities and attrributes I will always remember.
